When did you start windsurfing / SUPing and what has kept you going since?

Started windsurfing in the spring of 1983 in Myrtle Beach, SC. Still hooked on the feeling of speed and power that windsurfing provides. Whether it’s cruising on a slalom board or high-wind wave/bump conditions, windsurfing puts me right in the moment and provides an instant break from the routine. I started SUPing here on the Columbia River in 2007 as a no wind alternative; it’s easy to do with family and friends, and a great work out if you want it to be.

Where did you grow up, and what brought you to the Gorge?

I grew up in Watkins Glen, NY, which is also a small town really similar to Hood River, and moved here for the windsurfing, skiing, and numerous outdoor opportunities.

Anything else you want to share?

I would say I’m really lucky to live and work in The Gorge!

Favorite gorge beach

Whichever one I happen to be at! Hard to beat the convenience of sailing upwind from the Hood River Waterfront Park for a short session, but if I have the time, The Hatchery and anywhere in the eastern Gorge.

post-session grub spot

Usually at home with my family!  Otherwise, Brian’s Pourhouse.

favorite no-wind activity

When I’m not chasing my 2 small kids?  Skiing, SUPing, cycling, motorcycling.

What do you do for activities in the winter?

Downhill skiing is my main interest in winter, but I always try to get away to at least one warm, sunny spot (usually Maui) for some windsurfing, surfing, and SUPing.
