How to choose a windsurf mast:

In shopping for a new windsurfing mast, we recommend you first decide on a price range that fits your budget, then look for the highest carbon content mast within that price range. The higher carbon masts will generally be lighter and more responsive, improving the "liveliness" and overall performance of your rig.

If you are surf sailing, or are particularly hard on your gear, you should be looking for a durable surf mast or a wave mast. These masts will not necessarily be the lightest, but are built to withstand the harshest conditions. They are guaranteed in the surf, whereas most other masts are not.

Reduced-diameter masts (RDM masts, skinny masts, etc.) are a great option as well, primarily due to their resistance to breakage in surf or extreme conditions. They generally have a thicker wall than other masts resulting in superior strength. They require special base extensions, and often a shim for the boom connection.
